How Often Should You Clean Your Gutters on Vancouver Island?

Coastal rain, Douglas fir needles and moss make Island gutters clog faster than most of Canada. Here is a realistic cleaning schedule.

Northside Gutters August 4, 2026

Vancouver Island gutters work harder than almost anywhere else in Canada. Between the fall needle drop, winter storms and the moss that thrives in our damp climate, a clogged gutter is rarely more than a season away.

The short answer

Twice a year is the baseline for most Nanaimo, Parksville and Ladysmith homes:

  • Late fall (November) — after the bulk of the leaves and needles have dropped.
  • Spring (March or April) — to clear winter debris and moss before the growing season.

When you need more than twice a year

If your property has any of the following, plan on three or four visits:

  1. Douglas fir or cedar directly overhanging the roof
  2. A low-slope roof that holds debris
  3. Heavy moss growth on shingles
  4. A history of overflowing gutters during heavy rain

Signs your gutters need attention now

  • Water sheeting over the front edge during rain
  • Plants or moss visibly growing out of the trough
  • Staining or peeling paint on the fascia
  • Downspouts that trickle instead of running freely

A permanent alternative

If you would rather stop climbing ladders altogether, leaf guards such as Alu-Rex T-Rex® and DoublePro® keep debris out while reinforcing the gutter itself. Most homeowners who install them go from two cleanings a year to a quick annual rinse.
